The Wireless WetSense Bed Alertamat is a slimline 25x76cm moisture-sensitive mat for discreet under-sheet placement in a bed, designed to alert caregivers immediately when incontinence occurs. The wireless transmitter sends the moisture detection signal to the Alerta Wall Point Receiver at up to 95 metres range, enabling nurse call system integration for centralised alerting or local in-room notification. Prompt incontinence detection prevents prolonged skin contact with urine, the primary mechanism of incontinence-associated dermatitis, and enables dignified care responses that avoid unnecessary overnight checks for patients who have not experienced incontinence.

CQC Regulation 10 (Dignity and Respect) requires that care providers treat people with dignity and respect their privacy. Routine manual incontinence checks involve directly touching the patient or their bedding without a specific clinical trigger, an invasive intervention many patients find distressing and undignified. The WetSense Bed Alertamat replaces routine checking with sensor-triggered response: staff only attend when incontinence has been confirmed by the sensor. CQC Regulation 12 (Safe Care and Treatment) is supported by the prompt response: incontinence-associated dermatitis can develop within two to four hours of sustained skin exposure to urine, and NICE pressure ulcer prevention guidance identifies moisture management as a primary skin integrity intervention. The WetSense sensor provides the prompt alert that enables the moisture management response within the clinically relevant time window.
Does the WetSense Bed Alertamat need to be under the patient, and does it work through a normal mattress protector?
The WetSense Bed Alertamat is placed on top of the mattress beneath the bottom sheet, positioned under the patient's hip area where incontinence typically contacts the bedding. It does not need to be placed directly against the patient's skin: the sensor detects moisture that penetrates through the sheet and any other bedding layers to reach the mat surface. The sensor will still detect moisture through a standard cotton sheet, though very thick or highly absorbent bedding layers may delay detection. Mattress protectors should be placed beneath the mat, between the mat and the mattress, to protect the mattress from any moisture that reaches the mattress surface.
How is the WetSense Bed Alertamat reset after a moisture event, and can it be used again?
After a moisture event, the mat sensor should be removed and cleaned before reuse. The mat surface should be wiped with the appropriate clinical disinfectant in line with the care home's infection control protocol for patient contact equipment, allowed to dry fully, and returned to use once dry. The sensor resets and returns to monitoring function once dry. Where incontinence frequency is high, care settings may maintain a rotation of two mats per patient, one in use and one drying after cleaning, to ensure continuous monitoring availability. If the mat becomes excessively soiled or sensor function appears degraded after repeated use, it should be replaced.
