The Alerta Wireless Window and Door Sensor is a magnetic contact sensor mounted across a door or window and its frame, transmitting an immediate wireless alert via the Alerta Wall Point Receiver when the monitored exit point is opened. Designed for use in dementia and cognitive impairment care settings where unsupervised exit creates a safety risk, the sensor provides the earliest possible notification, at the moment of door or window opening, giving carers maximum response time to intercept the patient before they reach an unsafe external area. Battery-powered and easy to install without wiring, it deploys across any door or window within 95 metres of the paired Wall Point Receiver.

CQC Regulation 10 (Dignity and Respect) and the Mental Capacity Act 2005 require that any restriction on a person's freedom of movement is proportionate to the risk it addresses and is the least restrictive option available. Locking doors to prevent dementia patients from leaving a safe area is a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard restriction requiring authorisation. The Alerta Wireless Door Sensor provides a less restrictive alternative: doors remain unlockable while the sensor provides the carer notification that enables responsive supervision. NICE Guideline NG97 (Dementia: Assessment, Management and Support) recommends that care environments support people with dementia to move safely rather than imposing physical restrictions, and the door sensor supports this by enabling responsive supervision rather than physical barrier.
Does the Alerta Door Sensor work on fire doors, and are there fire safety considerations?
The Alerta Door Sensor can be mounted on fire doors as a surface-mounted sensor that does not interfere with the door's fire resistance or self-closing mechanism. However, the monitoring system must not be used to lock fire exits or restrict their emergency opening. Any modifications to fire door function must be assessed by the fire safety responsible person in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 independently of the Alerta sensor installation. Confirm with the care home's fire safety responsible person that the specific door's fire safety function is unaffected by the surface-mounted sensor before deployment.
Can the sensor be reset to stop alerting after a monitored exit has been responded to?
The alert transmits to the Wall Point Receiver when the door is opened. Once the door is closed, the magnetic contact is re-established and the sensor resets. Subsequent openings generate a fresh alert. The Wall Point Receiver alert sound continues until manually silenced or until it times out according to the receiver's settings, after which the receiver returns to standby ready for the next alert. Responding carers should silence the Wall Point Receiver upon attending to the alert, in accordance with the care home's monitoring response protocol, to prevent the alert sound continuing after the exit attempt has been managed and documented.
