The Lomond Long Side Rails (Set of 4) provide full-length bilateral side rail coverage for Lomond profiling beds. Two rails are installed on each side of the bed, covering the full length of the mattress platform on both sides. This configuration is indicated for patients assessed as requiring bilateral fall prevention protection as part of a documented falls prevention care plan under NICE NG147. The rails attach and detach tool-free, enabling rapid carer access to the patient from either side during personal care and clinical tasks, and allowing removal when the clinical indication is not present. Available in oak and walnut finishes to match the Lomond bed frame specification.

Side rail use on profiling beds is subject to MHRA Bed Rail Safety Guidance, which requires a documented bed rail risk assessment covering the 7 entrapment zones before any rail is fitted. The risk assessment must be completed for each individual patient and reviewed regularly. Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA 2005) requires a capacity assessment where the patient may lack capacity to consent to rail fitting; where the patient lacks capacity, the decision must be made in their best interests and documented accordingly. CQC Regulation 12 (Safe Care and Treatment) requires that side rail use is not routine but is based on an individual clinical assessment. NICE NG147 (Falls in Older People) supports rail use where it is part of a documented multi-component falls prevention plan. Bed rail bumpers (sold separately) should be assessed as part of the risk assessment for all rail placements.
Are bed rails required on all Lomond profiling beds?
No. MHRA guidance and CQC requirements are clear that side rail use must not be routine; it must be based on an individual assessment of the patient's fall risk, capacity and clinical need. Some patients may require bilateral rails; others may need a single rail on one side only (see Lomond Single High Side Rail); and others may be better served by a low bed position without rails. The assessment and decision must be documented in the patient's care plan with review dates.
Should bed rail bumpers be fitted with this product?
Bed rail bumpers should be assessed as part of the MHRA bed rail risk assessment. For patients with agitation, dementia or a history of contact injury from rail surfaces, bumpers are a standard additional mitigation. The 2-bar Alerta bumpers (200cm or 220cm depending on rail length) are compatible with Lomond long side rails. Bumpers are sold separately and should be ordered and fitted alongside the rails where the risk assessment indicates they are required.
