The Alerta Full Length PU Bed Rail Bumpers are specifically constructed for profiling beds with wooden side rails rather than standard metal bar rails. Where metal bar rail bumpers use a netting section to bridge the open gaps between bars, wooden rails present a continuous surface that requires full-length unbroken padding coverage. The full-length PU bumper provides this continuous padded barrier without a netting aperture. Phthalate-free PU construction is antibacterial, impermeable and breathable, and wipe-clean for NHS IPC compliance between patients and between uses.

| Primary Difference from Metal Bar Bumpers | No netting section; designed for continuous wooden rail surface |
The Full Length PU Bed Rail Bumpers address the entrapment and contact injury risks identified in MHRA Bed Rail Safety Guidance for wooden side rail configurations. MHRA guidance identifies entrapment zone 1 (between the top rail and the mattress) and zone 7 (between the end of the rail and the side of the mattress) as common injury sites for wooden rail beds; full-length bumpers reduce exposure across these zones by padding the rail surface in contact with the patient. CQC Regulation 12 (Safe Care and Treatment) requires that all identified patient safety risks are mitigated through documented interventions; fitted bumper type should be recorded in the patient's bed rail risk assessment alongside the rail type. MCA 2005 capacity assessment is required before any side rail is fitted to a patient's bed.
Why do wooden rail bumpers not have a netting section?
Metal bar rail bumpers use a central netting section to bridge the gaps between the open bars, which would otherwise create pockets of bumper fabric that are unsupported and prone to bunching. Wooden side rails present a solid continuous surface with no open gaps between bars; there is no structural requirement for a netting bridge. The full-length continuous PU surface provides consistent padding coverage against the solid wooden rail profile.
Can these bumpers be used on metal bar rails?
These bumpers are designed for wooden rail profiles and are not recommended for metal bar rails. On metal bar rails, a full-length bumper without netting may not distribute evenly across the open gaps between bars and could shift during patient movement. For metal bar side rails, the 2-bar bumpers with central netting (200cm or 220cm versions) are the correct specification, as the netting bridges the bar gaps and maintains even coverage.
