The Alerta 2 Bar Bed Rail Bumpers (220cm Extended) provide padded protection across the full length of longer 2-bar profiling bed side rails. Where a standard Lomond bed has been fitted with the 20cm Extension Kit, the installed rail length extends beyond the standard 200cm, creating an unpadded gap at the foot end if a standard 200cm bumper is used. The 220cm extended bumper closes this gap entirely. Phthalate-free PU construction is antibacterial, impermeable and stretchable; the central breathable netting section maintains staff visibility and airflow; zip fastening secures across both rail bars without tools.

The 220cm extended bumper ensures full MHRA entrapment zone coverage across the complete installed rail length on extended profiling beds. Where a Lomond bed has been fitted with the 20cm Extension Kit and corresponding side rails, a 200cm bumper creates an unpadded 20cm section at the foot end - a gap that represents an unmitigated contact and entrapment risk. MHRA Bed Rail Safety Guidance requires that all entrapment zones are addressed across the full rail length; the 220cm extended bumper addresses this requirement for extended beds. CQC Regulation 12 (Safe Care and Treatment) requires documented risk mitigation for all identified risks; fitted rail length and bumper coverage should be recorded in the patient's care plan. MCA 2005 capacity assessment is required before any side rail is fitted.
How do I know whether to order the 200cm or 220cm bumper?
Measure the installed side rail length on the profiling bed. Standard Lomond beds without an extension kit have a rail span of approximately 200cm; a 200cm bumper is the correct specification. Where a Lomond 20cm Extension Kit has been fitted and the rails extend to approximately 220cm, the 220cm extended bumper is required. Fitting the wrong length leaves either a gap (too short) or an overhanging section (too long); both create risks that must be addressed in the bed rail risk assessment.
Can the 220cm bumper be used on a standard-length bed?
It is not recommended. A 220cm bumper on a 200cm rail span would leave approximately 20cm of bumper extending beyond the end of the rail. This overhanging section is unsupported and may shift during patient movement, creating a potential trip hazard for carers at the foot of the bed. The 200cm version should be used for standard-length rails and the 220cm version for extended rails only.
