The Select Healthcare Pro-Loop Universal Patient Handling Sling is a washable, reusable full-body hoist sling with integral head support, based on the design of the popular Pro-Loop Disposable Sling. It provides the same full-body containment and head support functionality as the disposable version in a reusable format suited to care settings where the cost economics of a washable sling are preferred, with the understanding that the reusable version requires validated between-patient laundry decontamination and six-monthly LOLER thorough examination that the disposable variant eliminates. Available in Small, Medium and Large.

As a reusable hoist sling, the Pro-Loop Universal requires LOLER 1998 thorough examination every six months by a competent person, with records maintained and available for inspection. Between patients, the sling must be washed using a validated laundry process at a temperature and with a detergent that achieves the level of decontamination required by the care setting's infection control policy - for most NHS trust and CQC-registered care home settings, this means washing at 60 degrees Celsius in a validated laundry process before the sling is returned to service for a different patient. Unlike the disposable Pro-Loop which provides guaranteed per-patient infection control compliance, the reusable Universal relies on the laundry process being consistently applied - settings choosing the washable version should have a documented process for confirming that slings have been washed before reuse.
When should the Pro-Loop Universal washable sling be chosen over the Pro-Loop Disposable?
Choose the washable Pro-Loop Universal where the per-use cost of the disposable variant creates a significant consumable budget burden, and where the care setting has a reliable, documented laundry decontamination process for reusable slings that satisfies the infection control policy. The washable is more cost-effective per use over its service life but requires investment in the laundry process compliance infrastructure. Choose the disposable Pro-Loop where infection control is the overriding priority, laundry compliance monitoring is difficult to sustain reliably, or where the patient is at high risk of cross-infection from shared patient handling equipment.
How long can the Pro-Loop Universal washable sling remain in service before replacement?
Service life depends on the frequency of use and washing, the care with which the sling is handled and stored, and the findings of each six-monthly LOLER thorough examination. A LOLER examiner will assess the sling at each examination and remove it from service when it shows signs of structural degradation that affect safety - fraying at attachment points, weakened stitching, fabric thinning or damage to the head support structure. Outside of LOLER examinations, any care staff member who identifies damage during a pre-use visual inspection should remove the sling from service immediately and report it for replacement. No fixed calendar service life should be applied: LOLER examination findings and visual inspection, not time, determine when the sling is replaced.
