The Alerta Memory Foam Multi Support Cushion is the widest cushion in the Alerta memory foam positioning range at 49cm long, 32cm wide and 8cm high. Its wider profile makes it suited to back support in lateral positioning, behind-the-back padding in semi-reclined positions, under-knee elevation to reduce lumbar pressure in supine positioning, and general comfort and stability support. The open-celled memory foam interior conforms to body contours while the open-cell structure supports air circulation through the foam, contributing to microclimate management at the skin-support surface interface, which is relevant to NICE CG179 pressure injury prevention guidance on microclimate control.

The Alerta Memory Foam Multi Support Cushion supports the positioning intervention requirements of NICE CG179 (Pressure Ulcers: Prevention and Management) and EPUAP/NPIAP guidelines. Back support cushions in lateral positioning reduce the risk of the patient rolling fully supine and losing the pressure distribution benefit of the lateral position; under-knee elevation reduces lumbar spine and sacral pressure in supine positioning. CQC Regulation 12 (Safe Care and Treatment) requires that positioning aids in use are documented in the patient's pressure injury prevention care plan. The flame retardant cover meets BS 7177 care environment requirements and the waterproof antibacterial surface supports NHS IPC standards for reused positioning equipment.
What positions is the multi support cushion used in?
In lateral positioning, it is most commonly used behind the back to maintain the 30-degree tilt position recommended by NICE CG179, preventing the patient from rolling fully supine. In supine positioning, it can be used under the knees to reduce lumbar and sacral pressure. Its wider 32cm profile provides a more stable back support surface than the narrower universal cushion (19.5cm wide) in lateral positioning applications.
How often should the cushion cover be cleaned?
The waterproof cover should be wiped clean with NHS IPC-compliant disinfectant between each patient use and after any contamination. Inspect at each clean for surface integrity; any tears or failures in the waterproof layer require the cushion to be withdrawn from use. Wipe cleaning is the only available method as the cover cannot be removed and machine washed.
