The Compact Ultra Slide Sheet is a step up from the Mini in the ULTRA range, providing a versatile mid-size format suited to average adult repositioning tasks and to situations where a full Standard or Maxi sheet is larger than the task requires. With multidirectional glide fabric that allows movement in any direction on the bed surface, the Compact Ultra supports the three core patient handling tasks - lateral turns, up-the-bed repositioning and lateral surface transfers - without the need to lift, and without requiring the sheet to be repositioned between tasks when the direction of movement changes.

Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require that equipment provided for patient handling tasks is appropriate to the size and weight of the patient and the nature of the task. The Compact Ultra's mid-size format ensures the slide surface covers the patient's contact area for standard adult repositioning tasks, while remaining compact enough for effective handling by carers during sheet placement and removal. NICE CG179 (pressure ulcer prevention) identifies repositioning as a key intervention for pressure ulcer prevention but also recognises that the repositioning process itself generates shear forces that can damage skin: the Compact Ultra's low-friction surface minimises these repositioning-related shear forces, allowing the clinical benefit of repositioning to be achieved without the skin damage risk of high-friction manual repositioning techniques.
Can the Compact Ultra Slide Sheet be used in pairs for repositioning tasks?
Yes. Two Compact Ultra Slide Sheets can be used in a paired configuration with their low-friction surfaces placed against each other, with one sheet beneath the patient and one above. This creates a double-layer low-friction interface that reduces repositioning force further than a single sheet against the mattress, and is the recommended configuration for heavier patients or longer repositioning distances where the single-sheet configuration provides insufficient friction reduction. The paired configuration also allows the sheets to move independently of the mattress cover, which is particularly useful when the mattress cover has a high-friction surface that would otherwise increase the force required for single-sheet repositioning.
How frequently should the Compact Ultra Slide Sheet be washed in a care home setting?
The slide sheet should be washed after each patient use in accordance with the care home's infection control policy for reusable patient handling equipment. In most NHS trust and CQC-registered care home settings, this means a wash at 60°C using a validated laundry process before the sheet is returned to service for a different patient. For a patient whose sheet is used across multiple repositioning episodes during a single care episode, the sheet can remain in use throughout that episode and is washed at the end of the care episode or when visibly soiled. Follow the manufacturer's care label instructions for the maximum wash temperature that preserves the low-friction surface properties of the fabric.
