The Alerta Deluxe Support Belt is a soft, padded, contoured patient handling belt with ten handhold positions - six vertical and four lateral - and an optional pair of detachable leg straps, designed to assist carers with safe, dignified transfers between beds, wheelchairs, toilets and chairs as well as walking support and gait training. The non-slip inner surface prevents the belt from riding upward during sit-to-stand transfers and assisted walking, maintaining correct handhold geometry throughout the task. This belt is not suitable for lifting: it is designed for patients who can contribute lower limb engagement to the transfer and walking movement with carer support.

Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 TILE risk assessment must confirm that the patient can partially weight-bear and contribute to the transfer movement before the Alerta Deluxe Support Belt is prescribed as the transfer method in the patient's individual handling plan - the belt is a gait training and transfer assistance tool, not a lifting device. Using the belt to attempt to lift a non-weight-bearing patient creates a high manual handling injury risk for the carer and is not a safe use of this equipment. CQC Regulation 10 (Dignity and Respect) is supported by the belt's ten-handhold design, which allows the carer to maintain a firm, controlled grip on the patient through the belt rather than through direct contact with the patient's clothing or body - a meaningful dignity improvement in personal transfers that patients frequently cite as important to their comfort and confidence during assisted movement.
When are the leg straps required, and how do they attach?
The leg straps provide additional lower limb support for patients at higher fall risk during gait training or transfer tasks where leg abduction or uncontrolled lower limb movement is a clinical concern - for example, patients with ataxia, significant spasticity or very early-stage gait rehabilitation where lower limb control is not yet reliable. The straps clip onto attachment points on the belt and pass around the patient's thighs to prevent the legs from drifting apart during the transfer. For patients with good lower limb control during supported walking and transfers, the leg straps are not clinically required and can be left unclipped for greater patient comfort and movement freedom during routine gait training sessions.
Can the Alerta Deluxe Support Belt be used as a sole transfer method for a patient with Parkinson's disease?
For patients with Parkinson's disease who have sufficient lower limb function for supported standing transfers and walking - which is the case for many people with early to moderate Parkinson's - the Alerta Deluxe Support Belt can be an effective transfer aid when used by a trained carer who is familiar with Parkinson's-specific handling considerations such as freezing episodes and on-off fluctuations. During a freezing episode, the carer should not attempt to pull the patient forward using the belt but should instead wait for the freezing to resolve or use verbal and visual cues to initiate movement. An occupational therapist should assess the appropriateness of the belt for each individual patient with Parkinson's and provide carer training that includes management of Parkinson's-specific movement patterns during belt-assisted transfers.
